So it begins!

Welcome to our newly launched CrowdGather forum community. Our hope is that today’s historic launch by Apple and Steve Jobs of the new iPad tablet computer is the beginning of a new era of flat computing.

Personally, I prefer the term "tablet" as a descriptor, but Apple has a way of defining the words we use for technology and hopefully "pad" becomes a descriptor for all flat, 2D computing devices.

As we launch this community, Apple is the incumbent with the launch of iPad, but we believe that Google’s Android/Chrome initiatives as well as Microsoft’s ZuneHD platforms could bring significant competition and consumer options to the table.

This forum will evolve and develop structure, rules and policies as it grows, but for now it is a blank canvas for our members to build on. The hope is that we can provide coverage for both the naive consumer as well as the uber-geek hacker or app developer.

Enjoy!

The thing that is getting me the most excited is that Steve Jobs is rumored as saying that this is the most important thing he has ever done. Hyperbole maybe but if not....wow.

Jobs has always had a delusion of grandeur.

Just heard this on CNBC... "Steve Jobs' reality distortion" as a way he markets the ipad.

Newton All Over Again?

Nice looking unit, bad launch. Got to have all the cool stuff happening, like Flash, no? Jobs could have even made a conference call from the stage if they had included the ability to use it as a phone.

I'm not spending $500+ so I can have fun reading the newspaper. And even if it does so much more, Apple expects me to have an iPhone for calling, my MacBook Pro for working with serious apps like FinalCut, Logic Pro, Dreamweaver, and now this unit to read the Times, play games, etc. Right. Thanks.

Basically, people have been waiting for a long time for this tablet. And today, it just doesn't have that "Finally!" buzz. And that's not a good sign.

My opinion is very different because I find myself needing Internet access all the time.

For times when I cannot carry a bulky item I use my iPhone. When I am travelling or at conferences, or making small group presentations, or in the bathroom- I would use a tablet/ iPad. Finally, when I am at a desk or table I would use my desktop/laptop. Not everyone needs three form factors, but some of us do.

Also, I would like to wait and see what the official position is on Flash support. Everyone is assuming that it won't happen because the iPhone does not support Flash (except Youtube) and because they say a missing plugin icon on the demo today. There has been no official statement about Flash support that I am aware of. Hopefully, Apple will make this happen or at the very least Adobe can sell a Flash plugin for a few bucks.

I would hate to own this and not be able to watch adult content so Flash is A REALLY BIG DEAL!!
