Will the iPad save print media?

March 26, 2010 by jschneier

So the biggest question for me with the iPad, ereaders, tablets and slates is are we seeing new life breathed into "print" subscriptions? The WSJ recently kind of announced that they could be charging $18 for their subscription via an iPad. This is $6 more than they are charging now for an online but quite a bit cheaper than a print subscription. Maybe there will be extra features or something but the real question is has the print industry figured out a way to start making money again?

I love the idea of picking up an tablet and viewing print media without the clutter of magazines or newspapers. But just based on rumors it seems some publishers think they can charge full news stand price for a digital subscription. In this case they will shoot themselves in the foot.

Zinio, who will have an ipad app, has a huge selection of digitized magazines, but charges full price for some of them. Its ridiculous that they save huge amounts of money on print distribution and don't pass that onto consumers- that greedy attitude is what will be their downfall.

The hurdle for these traditional publishers is to convince the younger generation and the older that grew up with the internet to pay for news.
